OWLink developed this technology using the advanced optical wave division multiplexing (WDM) scheme. Key components in the system are OWLink’s ASIC and DLI Laser Modules.

The thin transparent optical fiber cable closely resembles a fishing line and may be installed on the wall with the fiber being virtually invisible. These products transmit uncompressed digital video and audio with Hollywood approved content protection protocol, HDCP. Focused on improving the digital home, these products allow consumers to place their home electronics in the most convenient places in the home without breaking open walls pulling traditional cables around.

The FO2800 series of products interface directly to HDMI or DVI source devices and displays. Component video sources can be connected as well, but require an analog to digital converter. The FO2800 series of products also support direct connection to stereo equipment, IR equipment, and USB keyboard/mouse equipment using their appropriate connector types.

OWLink ASICs are responsible for combining and uncombining the high definition digital video, audio, and control signals. These ASICs also handle all of the necessary signal timing, making sure everything is in sync. OWLink DLI Laser Modules are responsible for converting the combined electrical signals, provided by OWLink ASICs, into light (optical) and vice versa. OWLink DLI Fiber Optic Cables connect the OWLink DLI Laser Modules together, allowing for long distance transmission of high definition digital video, audio, and control signals.

The FO2800 series of dongles were designed to be very small and can be attached to the back of a HDTV or projector using the provided double sided tape. Both transmitter and receiver are easy to use, due to their plug and play nature. In the FO2800 kits, all the necessary cabling is provided to setup a fiber optic digital video link. Simply plug your video and audio source into the transmitter, connect the transmitter to receiver using DLI fiber optic cable, and connect the receiver to your HDTV or projector.

With existing technologies it is not possible to transmit high definition digital video over long distances. Typical HDMI cables have a maximum length of 50ft. before signal is lost, due to digital cliff effect, and can be very expensive. In addition, traditional long cabling is installed inside the wall, requiring walls to be cut open and then to patch/paint those holes. This is a variable cost depending on how much work is needed and who is doing the work.
